News Growing Curious Minds: Students Investigate What Seeds Need to Sprout

Published on April 23, 2026

Our 5th grade science students at Jefferson are working in teams to design and carry out experiments centered on an essential question: What does a seed need to sprout?

Each group is testing different variables—such as sunlight, soil type, and temperature—while carefully controlling other factors to ensure a fair and accurate test. They began by creating detailed experimental plans and are now collecting both quantitative data (measurable numbers) and qualitative data (observations).

In the next phase, students will graph and analyze their results, using evidence to draw meaningful conclusions.

Developing Potential
Students are thinking like real scientists—asking questions, designing experiments, and using data to support their conclusions. Through this process, they are building important skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and perseverance.

Building Relationships
Collaboration is a key part of this project. Students are working together in teams, sharing ideas, and supporting one another throughout the experiment. They are learning to communicate effectively, listen actively, and respect diverse perspectives.
