Grading Purpose Statement
The purpose of grading in the Pella Community School District is to improve student achievement by focusing instruction and the alignment of curriculum with the essential standards. Our grading practices will accurately communicate to students, parents, teachers, and administrators what each student knows and is able to do. We will separately assess the influence of work habits on student learning.
Why Standards Referenced Grading?
Standards referenced grading is a method of focusing on what students should know and be able to do. Teachers carefully consider what skills and abilities must be demonstrated in the course and develop definitions of what it looks like to be at the beginning, developing, and secure level as well as what it looks like to exceed expectations in those skill levels. This allows students to know exactly what they need to do to reach the targets. In addition, it helps the teacher know how to help students improve in the targeted skills.
