I was born in Massachusetts, but grew up and attended school in Storm Lake and Mason City, IA. I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. I graduated from Iowa State University where I met my husband, Kevin. We began our married life Austin, Minnesota where I taught 3 and 4 year old preschool for two and a half years before staying home to raise our sons. We have 3 wonderful boys- James, Thomas, and Stephen. During my time as a stay-at-home mom we lived in Minnesota; Houston, TX; Pella, IA; and Macomb, IL. I stayed active supporting children by leading activities at church, volunteering at the schools our boys attended, coaching Odyssey of the Mind, and being a Cub Scout Den Leader. When our youngest started kindergarten I returned to teaching. I worked as a part-time associate and substitute taught in Illinois for 2 years before we returned to Pella in 2013. I substitute taught for Pella Schools for 4 years before becoming part of the Jefferson team in 2017.
When I am not at school you will find me cheering on our children at their activities, volunteering at church or one of the schools, training for the Twin Lakes Triathlon, or doing one of my many hobbies. I enjoy reading, playing Word Cookie with my husband, doing scroll saw projects in our wood shop, cooking, biking, quilting, learning about history- especially my family history, and spending time at the lake where my grandmother lives doing lake activities. As a Language Arts and Social Studies teacher I get to encourage 5th grades as we practice many of my hobbies every day! Together we get to learn more about the patterns and connections in our English language, share books, and I get to teach the students how to become historians themselves. I can’t imagine a better job!
