Orton-Gillingham Approach

Elementary teachers throughout the Pella Community School District have been actively implementing the Orton-Gillingham approach during the past school year.  Orton-Gillingham is an instructional, multi-sensory approach used with children who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing associated with dyslexia.  Research has shown that this multi-sensory approach is also beneficial for all children as they learn to be accurate readers.  There are many different routines involved in this approach, some of which include writing graphemes (letters) in sand, discriminating vowel sounds by holding up vowel tents, and orally segmenting (taking apart sounds) and blending (putting together) words.
